How to oil your garden furniture
Before you start
Make sure it’s a warm day above 10ºC and rain isn’t forecast. The wood needs to be clean and bare to help the oil soak in so you will need to remove any coatings first.
How to prepare old garden furniture
- Use a garden furniture stripper to remove old paint or varnish.
- Lightly sand the furniture to remove rough splinters.
- Wipe the garden furniture with white spirit to ensure any excess grease is removed.
How to prepare new garden furniture
- Make sure that your garden furniture is clean, free from dust and dirt.
- Use a stiff wire brush to remove surface wood fibres or splinters.
Application
- Give the tin a good shake to mix together all the colour pigments.
- Pour plenty of oil onto a lint-free cloth.
- Test the colour of the oil on a small, hidden patch to make sure you’re happy with it.
- If you are happy with the colour, wipe the oil onto your furniture and rub it in well to ensure it soaks in.
- Wipe away any excess oil with a separate clean cloth.
- Wait four hours for the first coat to dry.
- For the best protection, apply three coats waiting four hours between each.
Aftercare
Cleaning
Cloths can be cleaned in warm soapy water.
To make sure your furniture stays in the best possible condition, clean it regularly with a cloth to remove marks or stains.
Maintenance
The colour of your furniture will fade over time so for the best results, apply a new coat every 12 months.
