How to use Stays White Ultra Tough Paint

Before you start

This paint needs you to do a little bit of preparation before you can apply it. It’ll be worth the extra effort, preparation helps the paint to stick and will look like a professional has done it.

Our ultra-tough paint is best applied when the temperature is above 10⁰c. It’s low odour so there’s no lingering smells but you might still want to open a window or door for a little bit of extra ventilation.

Cover everything you don’t want to get paint on with a dust sheet. Our paint it drip resistant but not accident-proof.

How to prepare bare wood for painting

  1. Sand the surface with 120 grit sandpaper going in the direction of the grain. This will give it a smooth finish perfect for your paint to stick to.
  2. Once the dust from sanding has settled, wipe it up with white spirit and a cloth.
  3. To prevent knots from showing through and ruining your hard work, use a knot blocker solution to put a stop to it. Don’t forget to fill in cracks and holes with a filler. This will give you the best surface to work on.

How to prepare previously painted wood.

  1. If your existing paint is in a good condition, your job here is easy. Just lightly sand it with 240 grit sandpaper and then apply a primer and undercoat.
  2. But if your paint is flaking, cracking or peeling, you’ll need to put a bit more elbow grease in. Use 120 grit sandpaper and sand the paint off so you can see the bare wood. This is done easiest with an electric sander.
  3. Let the dust settle and wipe it up with white spirit and a cloth.
  4. Block any knots and fill in cracks and holes so your surface is completely smooth and ready for painting.

Application

  1. Give the paint a really good stir to even out the lumps.
  2. Use a synthetic brush and paint in the direction of the woodgrain.
  3. Leave your first coat to dry for four hours.
  4. Apply the second coat in the same way you did the first. This coat will be touch dry in 30 minutes.
  5. That’s it, job done.
