How to oil your floor
Before you start
Pick a warm and dry day over 10°c. Be prepared and wear a mask when you’re sanding the floors as there will be a lot of dust.
Preparing a floor for oiling
- As you would with any flooring, sand down your wood using 120 grit sandpaper with a floor sander
- Let the dust settle before vacuuming it up. Once all the dust is gone, wipe down the floor with white spirit and leave it to dry before oiling.
If you’re topping up a previously oiled floor, just give it a good vacuum and then a wipe down with white spirit.
Application
- Load up your brush with oil and apply it in the direction of the grain. Focus on a section of three to four boards to avoid any crossover marks.
- Wait 15 minutes for the oil to penetrate the wood and remove any excess with a lint free cloth. Make sure you’ve got the right kind of cloth otherwise you’ll end up with loads of bits in your newly oiled floor.
- Wait 30 minutes before applying the next coat and repeat steps one and two. For the best results, you’ll need three coats.
- Your floor will be touch dry in just 30 minutes
Aftercare
General cleaning
Once your floor has dried, you can take care of it as normal. Vacuum or sweep up any dirt or grit that could scratch your floor and use a damp cloth to wipe up any spills or scuffs.
Repairing a scratch
If you notice your floor is scratched, simply repeat the steps and cover up the damaged area.
