How to paint your floor
Before you start
Make sure the room is above 10°c for the perfect painting temperature. Remove all your furniture and open the doors and windows for extra ventilation.
Preparing concrete and stone floors for painting
- Newly laid concrete has to be left for a month in order to set and dry properly. Once you’ve left it a month, use a wire brush to remove any dust.
- To prevent your concrete floors from cracking or blistering, seal it with a stabilising solution. Alternatively you can pour some of the paint into a container and dilute with 10% water. Apply a thin coat to your floor and leave it to dry before painting with undiluted paint.
For previously painted concrete or stone, wire brush the floor to help the paint stick. Then wipe it down with white spirit and leave to dry before painting.
Preparing wooden floors for painting
- A smooth floor helps the paint stick so use a floor sander and 120 grit sandpaper to sand your wood.
- Let the dust settle and then vacuum it up and wipe down your floor with white spirit.
- If you notice any holes or imperfections, fill them in with a wood filler. For knots, seal them with knot blocker.
Application
- The colour in the tin will look different at first so you need to stir it thoroughly to mix the pigments.
- Test it on a small patch of your floor and leave it to dry. The colour should now be as expected so make sure you’re happy with it. You can use a brush, roller or our Perfect Finish Pad to apply the paint.
- Start painting in the corner that’s furthest from the door. If you’re painting wooden floorboards, focus on two or three at a time to avoid overlap marks and paint in the same direction as the grain. Make sure you don’t paint yourself into a corner though!
- Wait four to six hours for the first coat to dry before adding another. For the best results, apply three coats.
- After four to six hours you’ll be able to walk across your floor and carefully move your furniture back in. After 72 hours, your floors will be able to resist knocks, scuffs and scratches without chipping, flaking or peeling.
Aftercare
Cleaning
Looking after your floor is easy. Vacuum or sweep up any dirt that may cause scratches and use a damp cloth to wipe up spillages.
For a deeper clean, a floor cleaning solution will have your floor looking clean and shiny in no time. Be sure to avoid using household cleaners and detergents, as these could ruin the finish of your floor over time.
Repair
Our paint is diamond hard so it shouldn’t get damaged. But if you manage to, just sand down the area and apply a thin coat of the paint to have it as good as new.
